Stenograph
The Process
Discover
Stenograph wanted a product focused squarely on adjustability and customizability and size, creating a universal machine that would be smaller, could still feel like it was nearly custom fit just for each user. For us, that meant finding ways to use aesthetics and form to accentuate the evolution to a smaller unit. Despite our focus being mostly styling for this project, this stage required close collaboration with Stenograph’s engineers, so we could be “their hands” in the generation of tooling-ready CAD models for the plastic parts.
Design
For Stenograph, everything about the NextGen had to be better than anything that had come before. Stenograph had already defined and engineered the under-the-hood improvements that would yield a peerless writing experience. On our end, we looked for ways to enhance the features and make them even more user-friendly through aesthetic styling. For example, we had already added numbering on the adjustment wheels in the previous generation; for the NextGen, we moved the numbers to the circumference of the dial. That way, they could be viewed more easily from above without the user having to move.
Deliver
The clean fluid lines and the minimal size of the enclosure are ideal for professional courtroom and office environments. To subliminally emphasize the “next generation” aspect of the NextGen, we focused on a modern aesthetic with a futuristic graphic-user interface. Altogether, the Stenograph NextGen is simply the most electronically sophisticated, compact, and aesthetically elegant stenograph machine available on the market.
Stenograph
NextGen Court Reporter
The Stenograph NextGen is the most lightweight, compact and precise stenograph machine ever created. This project, as with all the Steno projects before it, came to us already brilliantly engineered; it was up to us to render styling that would preserve and maximize their advanced functionality—like the incredibly short stroke—while creating an aesthetic design that subliminally but undeniably communicated: “This is truly the next generation of stenograph machine.”
Our industrial designers worked with Stenograph to improve every aspect of the court reporter and captioner experience with a machine designed to redefine user comfort and ergonomics.
Shortest stroke ever, with 13 positions to accommodate individual writing preferences
Widest range of tension, with 20 options (including the ability to remove all tension)
Quantified settings for stroke and tension with the numbers located on the dials directly in the line of sight of the user.
Raised function keys for improved tactile feedback
A full 180° of positioning for the touch screen.
