Cummins Allison
JetSort LX Coin Sorter

The Process

Discover

Cummins Allison—a leader in currency and coin processing machines—engaged With our design team in 2012 to revamp their JetSort coin sorter line—We were entrusted with both the cabinet design as well as the touch screen user interface design. These machines are used in high-volume commercial settings like banks, casinos, and retail operations, where reliability, speed, and ease of use are non-negotiable.

The original JetSort design was being replaced with better sorting technology which called for an update to the user interface, ergonomics, and industrial design to align with the expectations of modern commercial environments. Cummins Allison sought a refresh that would align with their brand’s reputation for innovation while delivering a more intuitive and professional appearance.

Design

To shape the redesign, we relied on the clients input who had studied how users interacted with the machines. Our client felt that the existing industrial design was disjointed. Materials and forms didn’t reinforce the advanced precision of the underlying technology.

The project team defined four top priorities:

  1. Refine the overall form language to appear more compact, cohesive, and user-focused.

  2. Improve the interface layout to simplify operation and reduce training time.

  3. Enhance servicing and maintenance access.

  4. Design had to accommodate multiple cabinet sizes to accommodate the varying currency denominations of each country.

Deliver

Our design team reimagined JetSort as a more modern and intuitive commercial device—one that signaled technical precision while still looking approachable and easy to use.

Every element was considered through the lens of both the operator and the technician—two audiences who rely on the JetSort every day. The design upgrade didn’t just modernize the look; it added real value in functionality and ease of ownership.

JetSort LX Coin Sorter

Meet the JetSort LX — our solution for a compact powerhouse of precision coin sorting. At the core of the redesign was the challenge:  incorporate an improved sorting engine capable of accommodating differing global monetary systems comprised of varying number of different coin denominations.  This feature delivers unmatched counting accuracy and boosting operator efficiency. This meant that the solution had to be configurable for different monetary systems resulting in the cabinet itself had needing to be scale able with different footprints.  This scalability of the cabinet made a huge impact on the aesthetics.

Key Design Enhancements:

  • A more unified shell structure with crisp edges and integrated “money bags” to reduce visual bulk and streamline the exterior profile.

  • Simplified operator interface with an angled front control panel, improving ergonomics and screen visibility for users of varying heights.

  • New visual hierarchy of elements using subtle color blocking and material shifts to guide user attention and action.

  • Improved service access zones to make it easier for technicians to reach and service coin pathways, reducing machine downtime.

  • Linear compact bagging system that allows operators to quickly change and relace bags as they become full

  • Adaptable sorter unit that allows for larger capacity bagging cabinets options to accommodate currencies that have greater coin denominations

Result:

The redesigned JetSort strengthened Cummins Allison’s product lineup with a refreshed look, improved versatility, and smarter functionality helped the machine appear more contemporary and competitive in a crowded and global commercial space. It remains a quiet workhorse, optimized for precision, speed, and simplicity.
