Shure, one of the world’s most trusted names in audio engineering, approached Cruver Design with a clear challenge: create a high-performance studio microphone with uncompromising sound quality—at a price point that would make it accessible to both professionals and serious home recording enthusiasts.
At the time, the professional recording market was dominated by classic condenser mics that leaned heavily on vintage aesthetics. Shure wanted something different: a clean, contemporary product that visually communicated the brand’s commitment to innovation and sonic purity.
Our challenge was to help Shure break new ground without alienating their loyal base. The mic needed to perform at the top of its class—while looking like no other studio microphone on the market.
Design
We started with deep research into both the functional expectations and aesthetic sensibilities of Shure’s target users.
Our team worked closely with Shure’s internal engineers to integrate the technical layout, acoustic chambering, and material requirements into a form factor that was both visually iconic and mechanically sound. Every design concept was evaluated not only for appearance and ergonomics, but also for how it interacted with microphones stands, cables, and studio environments.
One key insight: studio mics are often judged on first impressions—how they look on camera, on stage, or in a studio rack. That led us to develop a visual language rooted in performance, precision, and restraint.
Deliver
The final KSM32 design embodies minimalism and clarity—just like the sound it’s engineered to capture. The housing features a unique elliptical silhouette, tapered for improved line-of-sight in studio environments. Its bead-blasted finish communicates quiet confidence, while the open grill pattern was designed to increase acoustic transparency without sacrificing durability.

Shure challenged us to design a professional-grade microphone that would stand out in both studio and live production environments.
We began with deep competitive research and reimagined the category’s bulky, hard-edged norms. The result: a sleek, sculpted silhouette with flowing contours that break from tradition and elevate the brand’s visual identity.
Our design eliminated visual clutter by integrating fasteners and integrating the stabilizing band into the form. Dual logos ensure brand visibility from any angle, while precision casting, machining, and riveting boost durability—minimizing damage in drop tests and ensuring premium performance in any setting.

Decades later, it remains one of the most visually distinct and acoustically respected condenser microphones in the market.
